Axpo and Zelestra Partner for 207 MW Battery Energy Storage Project in Italy

Swiss utility Axpo has signed a long-term agreement with renewable energy developer Zelestra for a 207 MW battery energy storage project in northeastern Italy.

The 10-year physical tolling agreement will support grid stability and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, aligning with the European Union's (EU) energy transition goals and the Clean Energy for all Europeans package.

• Project Details: The battery energy storage system (BESS) will have a capacity of 830 MWh, making it one of the largest in Italy.
• Location: The project is situated in northeastern Italy, a region with significant renewable energy potential.
• Partners: Axpo, a leading Swiss power producer and energy trader, will provide long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for the project, while Zelestra, an Italian renewable energy developer, will oversee the project's development and construction.

This collaboration demonstrates the growing interest in battery energy storage projects as a means to balance the grid and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, a key aspect of the EU's sustainable finance and ESG regulations, such as the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
