Hanoi Power Corporation Pioneers Battery Storage in Vietnam

The Hanoi Power Corporation (HPC) has made a significant stride in Vietnam's renewable energy landscape with the inauguration of its first 100MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio in the capital city.

This strategic move by HPC aligns with Vietnam's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase the share of renewable energy in its power mix. The country aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, as outlined in its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement.

Battery energy storage systems play a crucial role in ensuring the stability and reliability of power grids, especially as the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources like solar and wind increases. They enable the storage of excess energy generated during periods of high production for later use when demand is high or production is low.

From a compliance perspective, this initiative by HPC supports the European Union's (EU) Green Deal and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which encourage businesses to adopt sustainable practices and report on their environmental impacts. Although Vietnam is not an EU member, multinational corporations operating in Vietnam may be subject to these regulations if their parent companies are based in the EU.
