Bill Gates-Backed Breakthrough Energy Fuels Lydian's Synthetic Aviation Fuel Ambitions

Synthetic aviation fuel developer Lydian has secured a significant boost in funding, raising $43 million to advance its technology aimed at making lower-carbon jet fuel competitive with conventional alternatives.

Leading this investment round is Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV), an investment firm founded by Bill Gates. BEV focuses on supporting cutting-edge companies developing innovative clean energy technologies.

Lydian's technology, based on a proprietary catalyst, enables the conversion of natural gas into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This process results in a significant reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional jet fuel.

With this new funding, Lydian plans to accelerate the development and commercialization of its technology. The company aims to demonstrate its process at a larger scale and secure partnerships with airlines and energy companies to bring SAF to market.

This investment aligns with the European Union's ReFuelEU Aviation initiative, which seeks to increase the use of sustainable aviation fuels in the EU. As companies strive to meet their CSRD and SFDR reporting obligations, investing in and adopting innovative technologies like Lydian's will be crucial for achieving net-zero emissions in the aviation sector.
